To protect and promote the spirit and substance of the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens OM
In many cases we are fortunate that there is plentiful information about Lutyens’s memorials either through newspaper reports, minute books of the appropriate war memorial committee, drawings or books about the architect. However, in the case of the war memorial in the Church of St John the Baptist in Wittersham, all we have is “Some Notes on Wittersham and its Church” written by Reverend W E Watson and two of the Churchwardens dated Easter 1931 and which refer to one of the “points of modern interest” being “The War Memorial, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, to the twenty-one men of Wittersham who gave their lives in the Great War”. It is understood that the tablet was installed in 1920.
Across the road from the church is Wittersham House, which was remodelled by Lutyens in 1907 for the Rt Hon Alfred Lyttleton MP.

Location: Church of St John the Baptist, The Street, Wittersham, TN30 7EA
